2. What is the kids.now solution?

We mentor kids to give them the right tools to make the right choices for a healthy, satisfying and productive life.

The kids.now tagline, "choose to lead", has a double meaning. We choose whether to lead and our choices determine how we lead. The kids.now program gives kids the tools they need to be leaders who make the right choices for themselves and for others.

We strongly believe that being a leader is not just a position. It is choosing to act on your own initiative, whether you are the captain of the team or the water boy.

By showing motivated youth how to discover and pursue their own goals, we empower and prepare them to take responsibility for the quality and direction of their own future.

Emotional Intelligence is the heart of the kids.now program and the single factor proven most highly predictive of success and productivity. If you would like to see some research, please look at the following:

Emotional Intelligence: What it is and Why it Matters

In terms of preparation for work, eight of the 11 employability skills in the Conference Board of Canada's Employability Toolkit are Emotional Intelligence skills that are part of the kids.now program.

We focus on communication, conflict resolution, goal setting, stress management and building on small achievements to develop confidence. As a result, the program proactively helps kids resist peer pressure towards drugs, sex and other high-risk behaviour.

"The best anti-drug efforts spend remarkably little time talking about drugs. Instead, they focus on helping kids cope with the demands and stress of daily life. Drug prevention can start by building a teen's confidence for a job interview or teaching a child how to rebuff a schoolmate who wants to copy homework." (Tara Parker-Pope, The Wall Street Journal , May 21, 2002)

Tweens are bombarded with imagery and messages encouraging them to act and buy like teens and adults, regardless of the fact that they do not have the internal resources to do so. It is frightening to contemplate the cumulative frustration engendered in the child who has neither internal nor external resources at his disposal and has no one to turn to. The kids.now program mentors these children to find hope and inspiration for their present and their future by showing them the power of their own ability to choose.
