9. What is the history
of kids.now?
Janet King, Executive Director and Founder, originally
came up with the idea for kids.now in 1997 as a
way to motivate kids to be their best, to gain
the confidence to "go for it" regardless of their
economic background, race, religion, physical,
developmental or communication challenges.
Janet's experience as a teacher in Canada and
Europe reinforced her belief that most kids have
the desire to succeed, but many lack the confidence
and direction to reach their full potential. She
realized that young teens particularly often need
the extra attention and encouragement of a mentor.
Back in 1997 when Janet was still a full-time
teacher with the Toronto District School Board,
she researched and developed the curriculum and
all the materials (even more stuff than we use
now!) and delivered the first pilot program herself
to two kids.
Based on that success, Janet delivered the program
to groups of 10 kids, and after two years realized that she
had something that, in her words, "made a lot of
sense". If 10 kids really liked it and benefited
from it, then 10 more probably would.
When our founding sponsor, the GAP, came on board
in 1999, Janet was able to recruit volunteers to
deliver four programs. And today we have delivered the program to over
5,000 kids.
Janet is still passionate about helping kids reach
for their star and continues to inspire many organizations
and volunteers to help kids.now reach more and
more kids.
